Are CoolSculpting® Results Permanent?
Many people can point out pockets of fat on their bodies that they’d rather not have. Unfortunately, targeting specific areas of fat through diet and exercise isn’t always possible. Nonsurgical body-sculpting treatments allow you to target those areas to contour your figure how you want it.
One popular body sculpting option, called CoolSculpting®, freezes fat cells to destroy them. Once those fat cells die, your lymphatic system disposes of them.
Board-certified OB/GYN Gary Willen, MD, MBA, specializes in personalized CoolSculpting at Tahoe Women’s Care in Carson City, Nevada. Dr. Willen can help you decide if CoolSculpting is your best option based on your cosmetic goals.
You might wonder if CoolSculpting can provide permanent results comparable to fat-removal surgery. Here’s everything you need to know about CoolSculpting results.
Targeted areas for CoolSculpting
CoolSculpting can treat nine areas that commonly hold fat on the body. During your consultation with Dr. Willen, specify if you want to target any of the following areas:
- Chin area
- Jawline
- Upper arms
- Flanks (love handles)
- Abdomen
- Fat around the bra line
- Back fat
- “Banana roll” under the buttocks
- Thighs
CoolSculpting may also reduce the appearance of cellulite, or dimpled skin, on the thighs and abdomen.
How the treatment works
The concept for CoolSculpting came about when Harvard dermatologists noticed indentations forming on the cheeks of children who sucked on popsicles. With further research, they discovered that freezing-cold temperatures could destroy fat cells.
CoolSculpting uses this principle to freeze fat cells in the areas you decide to target. Each treatment takes 30 minutes to one hour per area. Dr. Willen advises you to repeat the treatment several times, scheduling your appointments every one to three months. If you follow your treatment plan closely, you can see a 10-25% reduction in targeted fat.
CoolSculpting works best for people with small amounts of extra fat. It’s not a weight loss treatment and won’t significantly reduce your weight.
How you can maintain CoolSculpting results
Because fat cells treated by CoolSculpting are gone for good, the results are theoretically permanent. However, you may see fat reappear in treated areas if you gain weight.
To enjoy long-term results from CoolSculpting, you should try to maintain a healthy weight. Dr. Willen recommends weight management strategies such as:
- Adding regular physical activity to your routine
- Eating reasonable portions of nutrient-rich foods
- Avoiding beverages with added sugar
Be sure to discuss your overall health with Dr. Willen to make sure you’re a good candidate for CoolSculpting before you commit to treatment.
